ABIGAIL
Mc GINLEY

'And She'll Never Get To Eat You Like Your Heart's A Pomegranate.' Oil on canvas. 2019.
Abigail McGinley (B.1999), currently studying at the Slade School of Fine Art lives and works in London.
The London based painter is drawn to the idea of "a total art" [Gesamtkunstwerk], making everything beautiful because it feels good, her work makes consistent reference to decoration and theatre whilst simultaneously pursuing the tangibility of emotion.
Paradoxically wanting to normalise and eroticise the body, drawing from the ephemeral nature of intimacy: where feelings are intensified and linger. Her work confronts desire and it is through the erotic eye that her experiences are filtered in which she is then compelled to narrate them in paint. Her focus is making "the ephemeral" concrete, giving homage to the importance of gesture. It is through using a reduced palette and omitting all things that are unimportant that the figure becomes integral and a symbol of sensation.
"I want what I feel to be perceptible by touch. I want to sing a song at a karaoke night and make everyone cry even though I don’t know the words."
